Registering as a Building Construction Contractor

What does registration mean?Back to Top

Also known as pre-qualification, registration establishes a reliable and objective assessment of the capacity of a firm to complete the work required and optimise the predictability of project outcomes, including time, cost and quality.

Contractor registration is divided into two categories:

  • Major Works: building works institutional, building works residential, electrical services, mechanical services, fire sprinklers, fire detection, security services, radio communications, building management and/or direct digital control (DDC) systems, and lifts; and
  • Building Services Maintenance: the management of the maintenance of building services and related systems.

Registration is valid for two years.

Lodgement of an application for registration constitutes your agreement to comply with the National Code of Practice for the Construction Industry.

Who needs to register?Back to Top

Registration is for contractors and selected specialist sub-contractors seeking to tender for government building construction services contracts that have a value of $100 000 or more.

Contractor registration is not required for specialised services that are not included in the registration categories.

Building services maintenance contractors are registered but residential maintenance contractors are not. If you are a residential maintenance contractor you should contact individual agencies and request the opportunity to bid for work. See getting known for some marketing tips.
